Honoring the Life of Andrea F. Heckstall
My journey with 1000 Miles 4 begins with an extraordinary woman—my mom, Andrea “Tina” Heckstall. She was a bright guiding star in my life, always putting our family first and working tirelessly for our happiness and success.
One heartfelt memory stands out: during my teenage years as part of a popular dance group in Atlanta called J M Silk, my mother held down two jobs to support me, often staying up late to listen to my stories after long, exhausting days. When we needed custom costumes for a talent show, she spent an entire night sewing after a long day of work, crafting them with love and dedication. Even though we didn’t win that year, my mother’s effort made us feel victorious.
“A Heartbreaking Journey Through Healthcare Inequity”
In early 2024, my mom became ill with what should have been a “curable condition.” However, her initial treatment didn’t go well, and the healthcare system began to fail her when she needed it most. Too often, patients like my mom—especially those with limited insurance relying on Medicare and Medicaid—experience early discharges from healthcare facilities due to financial constraints and protocols prioritizing cost over patient needs. This often results in inadequate care when it is most critical.
My family wasn’t financially secure enough to provide the necessary extended care, which contributed to my mother’s struggles. After a year navigating this broken system, she succumbed to her illness in 2025. It broke my heart and left me feeling the need to “run” away from society.
“Turning Pain into Purpose”
However, I have since found purpose in my pain. I view this as an opportunity to “run” toward fixing the systemic issues that undermined my mother’s care. The mission of 1000 Miles 4 transcends honoring my mother; it’s about raising funds and awareness for those facing healthcare disparities and a wide array of social issues. We aim to ensure that everyone—especially the elderly, those fighting chronic illnesses, and families in underserved communities—receives the quality care they deserve. Through our collective journeys, we can advocate for better systems and make a meaningful difference in the lives of others, while celebrating the love and legacy of those we cherish.
